Frequently asked questions
Mai Khao Beach & Surroundings
-
Yes. Season 3 of HBO’s The White Lotus filmed scenes on location in Phuket, including our direct neighbor, Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas. Baan Mai Khao sits along the exact same tranquil stretch of beach featured in the series.
-
The famous Phuket plane-spotting viewpoint is located at the southern end of Mai Khao Beach, adjacent to the Phuket International Airport runway. Visitors can watch commercial jetliners make dramatic, low-altitude ocean approaches right over the sand.
-
Yes. Mai Khao Beach is part of the protected Sirinat National Park and serves as one of Thailand’s few remaining natural nesting grounds for endangered leatherback, green, and Olive Ridley sea turtles. Nesting occurs between November and February, supported by local conservation initiatives and annual turtle release events led by the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation.
-
Sirinat National Park: Explore quiet mangrove boardwalks and untouched coastal pine forests.
Turtle Village & Mai Khao Plaza: Stroll local boutiques, cafes, and open-air dining.
Soi Dog Foundation: Visit Asia’s leading animal welfare and rescue center situated just inland.
Splash Jungle Water Park: A family waterpark located a short drive south.
Wat Mai Khao: A peaceful local Buddhist temple offering a glimpse of authentic island heritage.
-
High Season (November to April): The sea is generally calm, clear, and safe for swimming.
Green/Monsoon Season (May to October): Mai Khao features a distinct underwater slope that generates strong shore-breaks and dangerous rip currents. Swimming is strongly discouraged during rough conditions. There are no active lifeguards, so always observe red safety flags and stick to the beachfront pools at Baan Mai Khao during high swells.
-
Mai Khao is Phuket’s longest beach, spanning roughly 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) of golden sand. Because large sections fall within protected national park boundaries, it remains free of jet skis, speedboats, and commercial high-rises.
-
Mai Khao’s location inside Sirinat National Park strictly limits beachfront commercial development. There are no noisy beach clubs, discotheques, or heavy traffic corridors, making it Phuket’s premier sanctuary for wellness retreats, luxury resorts, and quiet escapes.
